The New Audi RS 5: Where Hybrid Power Meets Raw Performance

The RS badge has always stood for something specific: uncompromising performance, precision engineering, and a driving experience that few cars can match. With the all-new Audi RS 5, Audi Sport takes that legacy in a bold new direction. Introducing its first-ever high-performance plug-in hybrid (PHEV) that doesn't ask you to choose between power and efficiency.

The numbers alone tell a compelling story. A combined system output of 470 kW (639 PS), a 0–100 km/h sprint of just 3.6 seconds, and an all-electric range of up to 84 kilometers. But the RS 5 is more than a spec sheet, it's a fundamental rethinking of what a high-performance Audi can be.

Audi RS 5 I

A Powertrain Built for Two Worlds

At the heart of the RS 5 sits a revised 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6, now producing 375 kW (510 PS) - a 44 kW increase over its predecessor. Paired with a 130 kW electric motor delivering 460 Nm of torque, the two work in seamless harmony through a hybridized eight-speed tiptronic transmission.

What makes this system genuinely groundbreaking is how the electric motor contributes beyond simple power assist. It eliminates the need for a traditional starter motor, sharpens throttle response off the line, and enables whisper-quiet all-electric driving through city streets. A 25.9 kWh battery (22 kWh net) supports up to 87 kilometers of electric range in urban conditions and recharges to full in just 2.5 hours via AC.

The result is a drivetrain that can glide silently through a neighborhood in the morning and tear through a canyon road by afternoon without compromise.

The World's First Electromechanical Torque Vectoring

Perhaps the most significant engineering achievement in the new RS 5 is something you won't see, but you'll feel immediately: quattro with Dynamic Torque Control.

Audi has introduced the world's first electromechanical torque vectoring system in a production vehicle. Located in the rear transaxle, a water-cooled permanent-magnet motor works alongside overdrive gears and a conventional differential to redistribute torque between the rear wheels in as little as 15 milliseconds, reacting 200 times per second to changing conditions.

In practice, this means the RS 5 corners with a composure and agility that conventional quattro systems simply cannot replicate. Entering a bend, the system stabilizes the car. Exiting, it shifts torque to the outer wheel to rotate the vehicle and maximize acceleration. At the limit, drivers can dial in controlled oversteer through the RS Torque Rear mode, all while the car remains fully composed and manageable.

This isn't evolutionary refinement. It's a new benchmark for what all-wheel drive can do.

RS DNA, Unmistakably Expressed

Audi Sport hasn't let the engineering ambition overshadow the visual identity. The RS 5 is wider than the standard A5 by approximately nine centimeters at each end, with flared fenders that give it an instantly muscular stance. The three-dimensional Singleframe grille, darkened Matrix LED headlights with a checkered-flag daytime running light signature, and matte oval RS exhaust tips complete a look that leaves no doubt about what this car is.

Inside, the RS 5 delivers the same uncompromising character. Sport seats with honeycomb quilting, a flat-bottom RS steering wheel with integrated mode controls, and a curved OLED MMI Panorama display create a driver-focused cockpit that balances sportiness with genuine everyday comfort. Five interior designs are available, including leather-free options featuring Dinamica microfiber - a material made from up to 47 percent recycled polyester.

Drive Modes That Match Any Moment

The RS 5's drive select system spans an impressive range of characters. Comfort and Balanced modes enable smooth, silent electric driving. Dynamic mode sharpens throttle response and introduces a noticeable rear bias for spirited driving. RS Sport mode prioritizes maximum traction and lateral acceleration. RS Torque Rear mode is purpose-built for closed-course driving, enabling controlled drifts with full driver feedback.

For those moments when maximum performance is needed on demand, a dedicated boost function deploys the full 470 kW system output for ten seconds at the press of a button, perfect for overtaking or track exits.

A new Audi Driving Experience function, standard on the RS 5, records sector times, drift angles, G-forces, and throttle data. Unknown tracks are automatically profiled after a single recorded lap. For the driver who wants to understand every element of their performance, this feature is genuinely compelling.
